Xhosa Umbhaco Skwenkweni Blanket with Two Tone Braiding
The Skhwenkweni is a traditional Xhosa shawl which is beaded, braided and has mother-of-pearl buttons. It is wrapped around the chest and used as a bra or breast/chest wrap. It can also be used as a small blanket. Made of the traditional Xhosa fabric iBayi, which is 100% cotton, it is made in the uMbhaco style. This designer, two tone braided shawl is can be made in any braiding and fabric colour for a bespoke outfit. Beading is done to suit the fabric colour, but you may also request any beading colours of your choice.

- Da Gama iBayi fabric is available in the colours white, cream, red, turqoise blue, black, mustard and orange. We can also make this item in royal blue but the fabric is not from Da Gama. The braiding is in done in black using shoelace braid.
- Traditionally the Skhwenkweni is worn together with a Mnyotho (skirt), Bhayi (shawl), Ncebetha (apron), Felt Doek and Faskoti (apron) to complete the full isiXhosa traditional dress called an uMbhaco set. The full uMbhaco set is available to purchase online too.
